HINTS FOR ATTENDING A SWIM MEET

  • Arrive 20 – 30 minutes before warm-up
  • Find a place to "live" for the day. The best places for swimmers are draft-free and close to the pool deck. These spots are taken quickly! The best places for parents offer a good view of the pool but are out of the way of meet personnel and swimmers. Please note that only swimmer and meet personnel are permitted behind the blocks or in designated poolside areas at meets.
  • Buy a heat sheet. They usually cost between $5 and $7. Highlight your events for the day. Write them on your arm or leg in order if you wish: event number, heat, lane. (Parents may wish to write their swimmers’ events on their own arms.) Be sure to use a waterproof pen or marker.
  • Sign in for deck-seeded events. These are usually longer distances and designed for older swimmers. You can determine that it is a deck-seeded event if the event is listed in the heat sheet as only a list of swimmers, with no heats or lanes given.
  • Talk with your coach to see if you are swimming in relays. Add any relay events to the list on your arm or leg.
  • Listen for your warm-up to be called. The announcer will tell you which lane(s) your team will use.
  • After warm up go back to your "home for the day," that special spot you chose. Rest rooms are very crowded at this time. Please be considerate of meet personnel and swimmers in early events if you are not swimming the first event. The meet cannot begin until they are in place.
  • Check in with your coach before each of your events. (S)he will give you helpful hints on swimming your race and remind you of things to work on.
  • Listen for your next event to be called. Line up behind the block at the lane in which you are assigned to swim. Be prepared to confirm your name with the timer in your lane.
  • After your race, check your time on the electronic board, if available, or ask your timer for your time. Please understand that this is not an official time.
  • If there is a warm-down pool, warm down after each event you swim to prevent muscle soreness.
  • See your coach again after each of your events for more information about your race.
  • Take time to cheer for your teammates.
  • At the end of each session, check your official times. They will be posted somewhere in or adjacent to the pool area.
